About the event
As it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, the City of Opa-locka stands as one of Miami-Dade County’s oldest incorporated municipalities. Founded in 1926 by famed American aviator and developer Glenn Curtiss, Opa-locka was envisioned as one of the most immersive and uniquely designed communities in the United States.
Drawing inspiration from Curtiss’ earlier developments in Hialeah and Miami Springs—and the fantastical world of Arabian Nights—the city came to life through the work of New York architect Bernhardt Muller. From its origins as a themed resort and industrial community to its pivotal role as a U.S. Navy defense hub, Opa-locka’s story is layered, dynamic, and deeply tied to South Florida’s growth.
